Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa or bursae, which are fluid-filled sacs that provide cushioning around the joints. Bursitis causes pain, stiffness, swelling, or redness around the affected area. It is usually caused by overuse of a joint, though in some cases osteoarthritis, infection, or gout may be involved. Depending on the cause, typical treatment recommendations may include rest, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), cold therapy, or antibiotics in the case of infection. You may also be given physical therapy, strength training, and/or corticosteroids, with surgery in serious cases1.
If the joints are in poor alignment, the bursae are more likely to become inflamed or irritated. You can help prevent and heal bursitis by learning proper alignment of the body, especially in the shoulders, knees and hips.
