This course teaches elements from various traditional dance forms,
including African, Caribbean, Indian, and especially Brazilian. The elements
are chosen for the way they reflect and support natural posture and movement,
for their capacity to stretch, strengthen, and exercise the body in useful
ways, and for their beauty. The form is specially designed to dovetail with the needs of people in modern cultures who tend to be stiff in the shoulders and hips, who can benefit from technical support and encouragement, and who may not
have discovered the dancer within. The course provides fun, exercise, good
movement habits, an avenue for artistic expression, and a social gathering,
all at once.
To provide more classes and make them more easily affordable, we are
offering a monthly membership rate of $140 per month that covers
attendance in all current dance, yoga, Stretch & Strengthen classes, and those we plan to
add to the program in the future. The drop-in fee is $35 per class
as it was in the past. However, the fee for your very first class is only $10.
In small classes that provide an excellent workout, this course promotes
mobility, especially around the hips and shoulders, and provides an excellent
complement to other physical activity. Students learn samba, samba-reggae,
maracatu, and other dances to the driving rhythms of Brazilian music. These
classes are intended for students with prior dance experience.
A course especially appropriate for people who teach dance or enjoy
the challenge and satisfaction of learning complex dance sequences. You
will learn new choreography in each session, stretching the mind as well
as the body. As with other dance classes offered at the Center, expect a
good workout, wonderful music, positive energy, and fun.
